A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
St. Michael’s Hospital, the largest multiple sclerosis clinic in Canada, required a leading-edge research and treatment center. The challenge involved creating a two-story cantilevered addition and a major fit-out within an existing patient care tower. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design services for this complex healthcare project.
Thornton Tomasetti designed and engineered the structural solution, which included installing steel beams to support the new cantilevered floors and distributing the loads back into the existing hospital structure. The work also involved creating a new central staircase, which required demolishing portions of the existing slab and installing new supporting steel beams. The successful BARLO MS Centre project was completed in 2021 and later won the Dezeen Leisure and Wellness Interior of the Year award in 2022.
