A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
Thornton Tomasetti provided connection engineering and Tekla modeling services to SL Green for the construction of One Vanderbilt, a 1,401-foot supertall office tower in New York City. The major challenge was erecting approximately 25,000 tons of structural steel on an aggressive schedule within an extremely tight construction site adjacent to and above Grand Central Terminal, one of the world's busiest transit hubs.
Through early collaboration that began 15 months before steel arrived on site, Thornton Tomasetti developed complex connection concepts and a detailed Tekla model. This preparation shaved at least eight months off the project's steel fabrication and erection schedule. The vendor's close work with the fabricator and engineer of record enabled the team to make decisions affecting steel sequences quickly, saving significant time and money while meeting the project's ambitious goals.
