Sanofi Genzyme builds a 3,300 ft² atrium with Thornton Tomasetti

Sanofi Genzyme, a major biotechnology company, constructed a new research and development center in Beijing and required structural design and façade engineering services for its signature four-story glass atrium. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide these services, focusing on a design that emphasized environmental responsibility and the elegant interaction of steel and glass.

Thornton Tomasetti created an integrated structural system for the atrium that realized the architect's vision of delicate, split structural elements. Key features included two unique glass façades, a floating glass and aluminum paneled roof, and a design that made the atrium's lateral system independent from the adjacent buildings. The vendor successfully overcame challenges, such as designing for complex cruciform columns, to deliver a purposeful and efficient space that connects the facility's new wings.
