The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation required structural renewal and engineering services for the rehabilitation and upgrade of its iconic Roosevelt Island Tramway. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design services to accommodate new equipment and meet updated codes.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented a solution that included using SAP computer models for analysis and designing tower reinforcements and new steel head frames. The work was completed within a tight schedule to handle heavier loads from new cables and cars, while also ensuring compliance with new wind, earthquake, and ice codes. As a result, the highly active commuter tramway, which makes over 115 trips daily, was successfully upgraded.
