A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The customer, Related, faced the challenge of constructing a 52-story concrete office tower at 10 Hudson Yards, a project initially perceived as unfeasible in New York City due to cost and design constraints. Additional complexities included the building's proximity to the High Line park, its geometrically complex angled design, and a planned 15-story atrium. Vendor Thornton Tomasetti was hired to provide structural and façade consulting services to overcome these obstacles.
Thornton Tomasetti implemented a structural solution using a high-strength reinforced concrete frame, which provided stiffness without outriggers and created open, loft-like office spaces. For the atrium, they engineered a one-way vertical cable system to support massive glass panels. The results for Related were a successful LEED Platinum-certified tower that became one of New York City's first concrete office buildings. The project's success is demonstrated by its occupancy by world-class companies.
