Case Study: Related builds 30 Hudson Yards with Thornton Tomasetti’s structural design and erection engineering

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Related builds 30 Hudson Yards’ 101-story tower with Thornton Tomasetti

The customer, Related, faced the challenge of constructing a 101-story, 1,270-foot office tower, the tallest in the Hudson Yards development, above an active rail yard. This required threading new foundations between the tracks and developing a complex structural transfer system to meet tight tenant move-in deadlines. Thornton Tomasetti was hired to provide structural design and erection engineering services for this unique project.

Thornton Tomasetti developed innovative transfer and outrigger trusses to support the building over the rail yard tracks, effectively creating mega-trusses that sloped columns to allowable landing spots. They also utilized modular construction for the cantilevered sky deck, assembling components in Italy to minimize dangerous field work. This approach was key to the project's resounding success, resulting in the completed 2.6-million-square-foot tower and an adjoining retail podium constructed as a single, structurally integrated unit.
