Penn Medicine delivers a 1.5 million ft² LEED Gold pavilion with Thornton Tomasetti

Penn Medicine faced the challenge of constructing the high-tech Penn Medicine Pavilion, a hospital with a bold, sculptural design that presented complex stability and sequencing issues during construction. To bring this vision to life, they engaged Thornton Tomasetti for its construction engineering services, including steel erection analysis and temporary stability engineering.

Thornton Tomasetti designed innovative solutions, including a 90-foot-tall temporary shoring system and unique removable column jacking procedures. This ensured the structure's stability and allowed for precise adjustments during construction. As a result, the 1.5-million-square-foot facility was successfully completed, becoming an iconic landmark and the world’s largest healthcare project to achieve LEED v4 Gold certification.
