A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Ohio renovates Rhodes State Office Tower's 629-ft landmark with Thornton Tomasetti

The State of Ohio Department of Administrative Services, the owner of the tallest building in Columbus, faced the challenge of modernizing the iconic Rhodes State Office Tower while it remained fully occupied. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design, building envelope, and advanced building analytics services for the renovation of the 41-story tower.

Thornton Tomasetti designed a customized repair program that included a bespoke window extrusion and surgical repairs to the granite façade, allowing the majority of the existing materials to remain in place. This approach, developed through close collaboration and detailed analysis, kept the project within budget and on schedule for its 2022 completion. The solution successfully improved the building's energy efficiency and performance without displacing its occupants.
