A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation, a pharmaceutical giant, sought to expand its oncology division with a resilient and sustainable building that would facilitate a flexible work environment. The challenge was to design a structure large enough to accommodate 800 workstations and various amenities while providing ample daylight within an intimate, award-winning architectural design. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design services for the project.
Thornton Tomasetti designed a structure with an extensively glazed roof and curtain wall suspended from exposed box beams. Key challenges included designing around exposed structural features and limiting deflection in the glass exterior façade. The use of Revit software helped save time and improve coordination. The resulting project, the Novartis Oncology Consolidation Center Building Three, was completed in 2012 and won several awards, including an ENR Best of the Best prize.
