A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The Nob Hill Condominium Association faced the challenge of addressing the seismic vulnerabilities of their 19-story, nonductile concrete building, constructed in 1963, while needing to preserve its key architectural features and minimize impacts to residents. They engaged the vendor Thornton Tomasetti for structural engineering services, specifically a seismic evaluation and retrofit.
Thornton Tomasetti implemented a solution that utilized carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) to strengthen critical structural elements, allowing all residents to remain in their units during construction. Working with partners, they developed a finish that made the reinforcements nearly invisible, preserving the building's aesthetics. The project was completed safely and quickly despite COVID-19 challenges, and Thornton Tomasetti continues to provide ongoing support for the revitalized landmark.
