Nationwide Children’s Hospital opens 80,000-square-foot conference facility and data center with Thornton Tomasetti

The customer, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, required a new combined conference facility and data center on a constrained site within its campus. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural design services for the four-story, 80,000-square-foot building, which needed to accommodate large open spaces and significant column transfers due to its cascading façade.

Thornton Tomasetti engineered a structural solution that utilized two-story-deep trusses to transfer data center columns to the column grid of the conference center below, creating the necessary large, open spaces. The team also employed deep foundations to address the challenges of the zero-lot-line site surrounded by existing infrastructure. The facility, which opened in 2021, successfully houses a large conference center and a dedicated data center for the hospital campus.
