A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The Maryland Stadium Authority required structural design services for a new multi-use sports and events facility, Meritus Park, in Hagerstown. The challenge was to design a stadium that would serve as a home for a minor league baseball team and host concerts, featuring premium seating options and a large lower level with various support spaces on a site with challenging soil conditions.
Thornton Tomasetti provided the structural design for the stadium, which included cantilevered seating for suites and a banquet hall. The solution also addressed areas of contaminated soil and variable rock at the site. As a result, the venue successfully opened in 2024, winning multiple awards including Ballpark of the Year and a structural engineering merit award, providing 4,000 seats for baseball games and becoming a new community asset.
