Case Study: Maryland Stadium Authority modernizes Oriole Park at Camden Yards with Thornton Tomasetti

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Maryland Stadium Authority expands Camden Yards video board 2.5x with Thornton Tomasetti

The Maryland Stadium Authority, owner of the iconic Oriole Park at Camden Yards, faced the challenge of modernizing the beloved ballpark to enhance fan experience and remain competitive without sacrificing its classic character. This required significant structural upgrades to support new amenities, including a massive new video board, all within a tight construction schedule that could not interfere with the stadium's near-constant use. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide structural engineering services for this complex renovation.

Thornton Tomasetti designed and implemented structural reinforcements to support the new, much larger video board and expanded premium spaces. Their solution included strengthening existing steel members and foundations, adding new concrete buttress walls, and quickly resolving unforeseen field conditions. These efforts successfully allowed for the installation of the 12th largest video board in Major League Baseball and modernized fan areas, all completed on schedule for the 2026 reopening. The vendor's work ensured the ballpark could meet modern performance demands while preserving its historic feel.
