L&L Holding Company restores 18-story Merchants’ Exchange Building with Thornton Tomasetti

The customer, L&L Holding Company, faced an immediate public safety challenge when a façade assessment of their historic Merchant’s Exchange Building, performed by Thornton Tomasetti, revealed significantly deteriorated and cracked terracotta columns that were unstable.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented a creative structural stabilization and restoration solution. This included temporary protective measures, a unique removal process, and the design of new, lighter cladding support brackets with improved moisture drainage. The project successfully restored the large-scale historic terracotta elements, breathing new life into the structure and earning a Metamorphosis Award for Best Exterior Restoration in 2022.
