A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Internal Revenue Service renovates 900,000 ft² Philadelphia post office with Thornton Tomasetti

The Internal Revenue Service needed to consolidate its northeast operations into a single, secure location. They selected a historic 1935 Art Deco post office in Philadelphia for this purpose and engaged the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti to provide historic preservation, protective design, and structural renewal services for the major renovation.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented a comprehensive solution that included blast hardening the structure, cutting a new four-story light well for natural light to aid LEED certification, and performing substantial structural reframing. The successful renovation of the 900,000-square-foot facility, completed in 2010, provided a consolidated and modernized headquarters capable of accommodating approximately 5,000 IRS employees.
