Infrastructure Ontario delivers a 170,000 ft² courthouse with Thornton Tomasetti

Infrastructure Ontario required the design and construction of a new Elgin County Courthouse that integrated with two existing historic buildings. The challenge was to provide critical acoustic privacy between courtrooms and meet strict provincial noise guidelines for backup generators, all while preserving the historic aesthetic. Thornton Tomasetti was engaged to provide architectural acoustics and noise control services for the project.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented unique, room-by-room acoustic solutions that matched the historic aesthetic to achieve required privacy targets. For the backup generators, the firm designed special silencers to ensure compliance with noise regulations. The successful project, which opened in 2014, resulted in a 170,000-square-foot facility housing seven courtrooms and underground services that functions reliably during power outages.
