A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The Halifax Regional Municipality faced a significant challenge in designing its new central library, which needed to be a vibrant community hub hosting noisy events while still providing quiet spaces for study. To achieve this balance of acoustical performance within a modern, open-plan building, they engaged the services of Thornton Tomasetti.
Thornton Tomasetti implemented a holistic acoustical design solution that organized the space from noisy to quiet zones and utilized carefully chosen sound-absorbing finishes and physical separations. The result was the successful 2014 opening of a LEED Gold-certified, award-winning civic landmark. The library is praised for its regional award-winning performance space and has become a centerpiece of downtown revitalization, greatly expanding cultural and learning activities for the public.
