Case Study: General Services Administration achieves enhanced security and 17% energy savings with Thornton Tomasetti’s façade renovation

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

General Services Administration upgrades federal façade with Thornton Tomasetti for 17% energy savings

The General Services Administration faced the challenge of renovating the aging façade of the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building to improve both its security and energy efficiency while the building remained occupied. They engaged the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti to provide structural design, protective design, and envelope renewal services for this complex project.

Thornton Tomasetti designed and engineered a unique, secure glass curtain wall system installed outboard of the existing façade. This solution created a double wall system that provided enhanced security for occupants. The project was successfully completed while the building remained operational and is expected to achieve a 17% energy cost savings due to the insulating layer of air between the walls.
