Case Study: Friends of the Coltrane Home transforms a historic residence into a museum with Thornton Tomasetti

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Friends of the Coltrane Home preserves 80% of exterior brick with Thornton Tomasetti

The customer, Friends of the Coltrane Home, faced the challenge of restoring the badly damaged and mold-contaminated historic home of jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane. Thornton Tomasetti provided its sustainability and renewal services, performing a condition assessment and offering historic preservation expertise for the structural and envelope restoration to transform the residence into a museum and music education center.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented a solution that balanced historic preservation with modern sustainability. The team performed energy modeling and utilized the necessary deconstruction to pursue a Passive House approach, installing energy-efficient components while meticulously preserving and reinstalling 80% of the original exterior brick to maintain the historic appearance. The vendor provided these services free of charge, and construction is underway with the goal of opening to the public by the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birth in 2026.
