A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Foothill-De Anza Community College District achieves LEED Platinum and 71% energy savings with Thornton Tomasetti

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District sought to construct a new Media & Learning Center that would serve as a sustainability bellwether, aligning with the college's values by achieving a high level of environmental certification. They engaged the vendor, Thornton Tomasetti, to provide LEED consulting services for the project.

Thornton Tomasetti managed the entire LEED Platinum certification process, providing technical advice and coordinating documentation. The solution included optimizing the building's orientation for energy efficiency, installing photovoltaic panels, and designing for maximum natural daylight. As a result, the building uses 71% less energy than regional standards, saving an estimated $60,000 annually, and earned 100% of LEED indoor environmental quality credits. Thornton Tomasetti helped the college create one of the most environmentally friendly community college facilities.
