A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The customer, the Department of General Services, faced the challenge of building the 1.25-million-square-foot May Lee State Office Complex on a tight schedule, a task complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic's shutdowns and supply chain disruptions. Vendor Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering and design-build collaboration services to help navigate these obstacles.
Thornton Tomasetti's solution centered on fostering close, remote collaboration to develop early steel fabrication packages, which allowed for critical long-lead procurement. This strategy enabled steel erection to begin just one year after notice to proceed, keeping the project on schedule for its 2024 completion. The results included maintaining team cohesion without finger-pointing and advancing a project targeting LEED Gold, Zero Net Energy, and Zero Net Carbon certification.
