A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The customer, a confidential research lab headquarters, faced the challenge of designing a highly sustainable research facility in the Greater Boston area that would also meet stringent vibration control requirements for sensitive laboratory equipment. They engaged the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti to provide a coordinated design that would address these ambitious goals.
Thornton Tomasetti implemented a comprehensive solution involving their sustainability experts, façade designers, and structural, construction, acoustics, and protective design engineers. The solution included the installation of five tuned mass dampers for vibration control and a focus on reducing embodied carbon in the building materials. This effort resulted in a 17% reduction in CO2e emissions for the whole building and contributed to the project being on track to achieve LEED Platinum Core & Shell certification, making it one of the most sustainable lab buildings in the region.
