Case Study: City of New York creates a sustainable new JFK Terminal One with Thornton Tomasetti

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

City of New York cuts 10,000 tons of steel and 1,000 piles with Thornton Tomasetti

The City of New York faced the challenge of replacing the outdated Terminal One at JFK Airport with a new, sustainable, and future-focused global gateway. The project required a fast-tracked design to compensate for pandemic-related delays and needed to address complex structural and façade engineering challenges. Thornton Tomasetti was initially engaged for connection design and peer review, with their scope later expanding to include structural engineering of record, façade engineering, and protective design.

Thornton Tomasetti implemented an integrated solution, utilizing their Advanced Project Delivery™ process to streamline collaboration between design and construction teams. Their approach included creative structural optimizations, such as hidden braced frames and slender perimeter columns, which eliminated over 10,000 tons of steel and 1,000 piles. This significantly reduced material costs and embodied carbon for the City of New York while accelerating the overall project schedule.
