A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study
The customer, Capital One, faced the challenge of constructing a high-end performing arts and events center, Capital One Hall, which was uniquely positioned above a shared loading dock and parking facility and topped by a heavy rooftop park. Their primary structural challenges included supporting the park over large open spaces and acoustically isolating the main theater from noise and vibration from both the traffic below and the public park above. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services to address these complex needs.
Thornton Tomasetti engineered a box-in-box structure with acoustic isolation pads to protect the theater from external noise. They designed massive trusses to support the heavy rooftop park and a complex system of transfer beams to reconcile the building's loads with the pre-existing loading dock columns. The result was the successful 2021 opening of the LEED Gold-certified venue, which now hosts a wide variety of entertainment and community events in its acoustically superior and structurally sound spaces.
