Case Study: Adventist Health achieves a state-of-the-art cardiovascular suite with Thornton Tomasetti structural engineering

A Thornton Tomasetti Case Study

Adventist Health modernizes a 2,900-SF cardiovascular suite with Thornton Tomasetti

Adventist Health faced the challenge of integrating a state-of-the-art cardiovascular suite into a constrained 1950s-era building at its St. Helena Hospital. The project required weaving massive new infrastructure for advanced imaging and surgical equipment into the existing structure without interrupting ongoing patient care, all while dealing with limited ceiling space. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services to overcome these obstacles.

Thornton Tomasetti designed a compact steel support system for the ceiling-hung equipment and engineered structural upgrades for a new rooftop air-handling unit. The solution allowed the new hybrid operating room and catheterization lab to be successfully constructed within the active hospital through careful phasing. As a result, Adventist Health St. Helena was transformed with a nearly 2,900-square-foot suite capable of supporting advanced, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures.
