Coinbase, a major cryptocurrency exchange, aimed to drive mainstream adoption of onchain technology by creating real-world utility and seamless user experiences for attendees at its Mainnet summit. The challenge was to integrate complex web3 functionalities like NFTs, gasless payments, and wallet management into a live event without a cumbersome user onboarding process. They partnered with thirdweb and utilized its Engine product, an all-in-one blockchain API platform, to power the technical backend of the activation.

Using thirdweb Engine, the Coinbase team efficiently managed the deployment of smart contracts and facilitated the airdropping of exclusive NFT collectibles to attendees for event check-ins, coffee purchases, and merchandise acquisitions. This solution enabled gasless USDC payments and seamless wallet interactions through the Coinbase app. The activation was a significant success, bringing half of all Mainnet attendees onchain and successfully showcasing the practical utility of web3 technology in a real-world setting.
