NZ Pork sets first carbon benchmark with thinkstep-anz, covering 30% of New Zealand’s pig herd

NZ Pork, the statutory industry board for New Zealand's commercial pig farmers, needed to establish a credible carbon footprint benchmark for different pig farming systems. They engaged thinkstep-anz to conduct a life cycle assessment that would identify the main sources of emissions and where future reduction efforts could be most effective.

thinkstep-anz conducted an assessment of nine representative farms, which covered about 30% of the national pig herd. The study found an average footprint of 5.8 kg CO₂-e per kg of pork and identified feed production and manure management as the primary sources. This provided NZ Pork with an evidence-based benchmark to track progress and prioritize impactful reduction strategies.
