Meadow Mushrooms tackle carbon emissions in their packaging

Meadow Mushrooms, New Zealand’s largest mushroom grower, wanted to become one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first large carbon-neutral food producers and needed help understanding the environmental impacts of its mushroom packaging. It engaged thinkstep-anz to assess the carbon footprint and material circularity of different 200g punnet packaging options.

thinkstep-anz carried out an ISO 14067-based carbon footprint study and used the Material Circularity Indicator to compare packaging made from different materials, including recycled and locally or overseas produced options, across the full life cycle from raw materials to end-of-life. The results gave Meadow Mushrooms science-based data to guide more sustainable packaging decisions, support supplier and customer conversations, reduce carbon and risk, strengthen marketing claims, and provide a foundation for ongoing packaging improvements.
