InfraBuild cuts reinforcing bar carbon footprint by 9% with thinkstep-anz

InfraBuild, Australia's largest steel manufacturer and recycler, faced the challenge of providing transparent, standardized environmental performance data for its products to meet growing customer demand. They engaged sustainability firm thinkstep-anz to help them create and update Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which were still a relatively new concept in Australia at the time.

thinkstep-anz developed and updated multiple EPDs for InfraBuild, incorporating Material Circularity Indicator metrics and ensuring compliance with new standards. The solution also included studies on renewable electricity and warm charging. The results were significant: InfraBuild reduced the carbon footprint of its reinforcing bar by 9% and its mesh by 21% between 2016 and 2020. The work provided the data needed for InfraBuild's customers to make more sustainable choices and for InfraBuild itself to prioritize its decarbonization strategy, including a planned move to 100% renewable electricity by 2025.
