GBCA recognises InfraBuild’s energy-saving Warm Charging process

InfraBuild, an Australian steelmaker, wanted to become a low-emission, carbon-neutral steelmaker by 2030 and needed to understand whether its innovative Warm Charging process could be recognised as an Energy-Reducing Process under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star Design & As Built tool. It engaged thinkstep-anz to independently review the carbon footprint of its reinforcing bar and mesh products using life cycle assessment.

thinkstep-anz assessed four steel production scenarios, quantified energy and embodied carbon reductions, and independently verified the results before preparing a report for the GBCA. The study found Warm Charging significantly reduced the natural gas needed in the reheat furnace and compared favourably with other processes already recognised by Green Star, supporting InfraBuild’s request for recognition and helping the company reduce Scope 1 emissions and related Scope 3 impacts.
