Countdown's carbon reduction pathway

Countdown worked with thinkstep-anz to set a science-based target and map out a carbon reduction pathway for its business. The retailer needed a clear, standards-based way to understand its emissions and plan how to reduce them, starting from a reviewed and updated scope 1 and scope 2 inventory aligned to ISO 14064-1:2019 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

thinkstep-anz developed a Countdown-specific science-based target, projected emissions to FY30 under a no-action case, and assessed eight carbon reduction options through high- and medium-ambition scenarios. The analysis helped Countdown prioritize effective changes, identify carbon hotspots, and plan action and budgets; four of the eight options had negative net cost values, meaning the savings outweighed capital and maintenance costs, and the highest-ambition scenario included a faster shift to 100% renewable electricity.
