A Things Case Study
AMAT, the agency for mobility, environment and territory in Milan, faced a lengthy and complex process for deciding which urban accessibility interventions to implement. This challenge was due to a lack of data, disparate tools, manual work, and many involved stakeholders. To address this, they partnered with the innovation design agency Things to develop WalkAble, a decision support system concept.
Things conducted research and led a co-design process to create the WalkAble product, which allows cities to analyze areas, prioritize interventions by impact and budget, and share proposals with stakeholders. The solution was validated through testing, and a workshop with experts from 12 cities found that 15 of 18 considered it a valuable or primary planning tool, with two cities offering to participate in further development. Things helped AMAT create a product that simplifies and speeds up urban planning with the potential for a huge impact.
