A ThetaRay Case Study
Large UK Multinational Bank partnered with ThetaRay to address a serious anti-money-laundering challenge in correspondent banking. The bank was handling six years of activity across 200 million SWIFT messages but was unable to detect sophisticated, unknown laundering schemes, including the Russian Laundromat, due to data silos and limited AML controls for SWIFT data.
Using ThetaRay’s AI- and unsupervised machine learning-based AML solution for correspondent banking, the bank analyzed historical SWIFT data to uncover both known and unknown suspicious activity. ThetaRay detected 100% of the 428 suspicious transfers linked to the Russian Laundromat, identified 8,400 anomalies grouped into 7 clusters, and surfaced 3 money-laundering typologies, helping the bank improve detection, forensics, and risk governance.
