Case Study: Hudson Yards achieves 24/7 power resilience with Thermo Systems' microgrid controls

A Thermo Systems Case Study

Hudson Yards powers 26 acres 24/7 with Thermo Systems

Thermo Systems was engaged by Hudson Yards, the largest private development in the United States, to provide a comprehensive control system for its on-site cogeneration plant and microgrid. The challenge was to engineer a system that would enable the massive 26-acre complex to remain operational independently of the local utility grid, ensuring reliable power and cooling for its residential, commercial, and retail spaces.

The solution implemented by Thermo Systems was the design and integration of a single, unified SCADA system to control and monitor the entire plant and electrical microgrid. This system incorporated functions like automatic load shedding, direct utility integration, and four distinct operational modes, including Island and Black Start. As a result, Thermo Systems provided Hudson Yards with a resilient behind-the-scenes power plant that keeps the entire development powered up 24/7/365.
