FDA expands campus utility capacity by 21.5MW with Thermo Systems

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the General Services Administration (GSA) faced a challenge meeting increased demand for chilled water, steam, and electricity at their consolidated campus. Thermo Systems was initially hired to provide design services for a new Plant Control System utilizing Allen Bradley PLCs and Wonderware SCADA.

Thermo Systems was subsequently contracted to implement the complex control and power management system, which integrated the new plant with the existing one to enable a coordinated microgrid. This solution provides a combined 40MW of electrical generation and is expected to save 48-million kW-hrs of electricity annually while reducing CO2 emissions by 24,000 metric tons. As a result of the successful implementation, Thermo Systems was awarded an annual support contract by Honeywell.
