Case Study: FDA achieves microgrid resiliency with Thermo Systems' control system

A Thermo Systems Case Study

FDA boosts microgrid resiliency with Thermo Systems’ 56MW control system

Thermo Systems was commissioned by the FDA to design and implement a control system for the power microgrid at its research campus in White Oak, MD. The challenge was to enhance the resiliency of the campus's complex power generation and distribution network, which serves 15 critical buildings.

The solution from Thermo Systems was a comprehensive Process Control System (PCS) featuring a Power Monitoring System and a Load Monitoring System. This system automated critical functions like black start sequences, load shedding, and spinning reserve maintenance. Thermo Systems completed commissioning in September 2014, successfully delivering a microgrid PCS that significantly improved the power system's reliability for the FDA facility.
