Windstream, a provider of high-speed broadband and communication services, encountered a challenge with its Calix C7 devices, where traditional automatic provisioning was impossible. These devices operate in clusters sharing a single IP address with multiple internal SNMP agents, making automated discovery by OpenNMS impractical and preventing inventory build-out while also threatening device performance with excessive SNMP requests.

The OpenNMS Group implemented a customized solution using its Meta-Data DSL feature. A custom script was developed to manually populate the inventory by explicitly identifying the necessary ports, bypassing the need for automatic provisioning. This allowed OpenNMS to collect performance metrics from each specific SNMP agent without overloading the devices, successfully enabling monitoring without any impact on network performance.
