Shanowen Files, a Dublin-based print and design company, needed a better way to price work than relying on industry hearsay and rough “guesstimates.” Using Tharstern’s MIS, and in particular the Cost Rate Manager tool, they wanted to understand their true machine, floor space, and overhead costs so they could estimate jobs more accurately and improve profitability.

Tharstern worked with Shanowen Files to calculate true hourly machine rates by factoring in wages, bills, insurance, depreciation, and factory space allocation. The results revealed that some low-used machines were costing far more than expected, helping the company remove unproductive equipment, reduce raw material stock, and raise prices where needed. Tharstern also helped Shanowen Files model future investments, including a move to a 4-colour press, and the company says its estimates are now “pretty much bang on” with clearer visibility of job profit.
