Case Study: Leading Major European Energy Utility achieves nationwide smart meter security and compliance with Thales

A Thales Case Study

Preview of the Leading Major European Energy Utility Case Study

Thales Helps a Major European Energy Utility Securely Transition to Smart Meters Country-Wide

Leading Major European Energy Utility was transitioning most of the country’s subscribers to connected smart meters and needed to meet strict Department of Energy cybersecurity and data privacy requirements, including a FIPS 140-2 Level 3 root of trust. To secure PKI, device authentication and sensitive subscriber data at national scale, the utility engaged Thales using Thales Luna Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and Thales CipherTrust Manager.

Thales deployed Luna HSMs to generate and protect high-entropy keys and handle PKI certificate authentication and device signing for millions of meters, while CipherTrust Manager encrypted personal data and centrally managed keys. As a result, Thales helped the utility achieve audit compliance (Department of Energy, GDPR, PCI), improve infrastructure resilience across millions of homes and businesses, and deliver the performance and scalability to support millions of smart devices and encryption keys.
