Socialstyrelsen - Customer Case Study

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) needed a proactive, unified identity and access management solution to better protect sensitive medical-professional and patient data and to replace disparate smart-card and password processes. Working with systems integrator Omegapoint, the agency evaluated options and selected a combination that included Thales’ Luna Network HSM to secure root certificates and cryptographic keys as part of their broader identity program.

Socialstyrelsen deployed Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager for smart-card credential management together with the Thales Luna Network HSM to provide hardware-protected storage for root CAs and private keys, full integration with Microsoft Certificate Services, and network-attached HSM performance (up to 20,000 ECC / 10,000 RSA ops/sec) with up to 100 virtual HSM partitions. The result was strong two-factor authentication, reduced IT support and management costs, improved user convenience and productivity, and a hardware-backed security posture that positions the agency for future compliance — all delivered with Thales’ HSM protecting critical keys.
