A Thales Case Study
OneSKY, the joint Airservices Australia and Australian Department of Defence program to deliver the Civil Military Air Traffic Management System (CMATS), faced the challenge of allowing privileged users to securely access a distributed, partly air‑gapped system from multiple locations while providing a consistent user experience and integrating with existing user stores and certificate authorities. Thales, as the design authority and developer of CMATS, was tasked with delivering an access solution that met these strict operational and security requirements.
Thales implemented an Access Management and Multi‑Factor Authentication solution using PKI-backed IDPrime smartcards and a Thales card management system to register, issue, renew, revoke, lock/unlock and provision temporary cards. Users authenticate by signing challenges with private keys stored on the smartcards; the solution integrates with OneSKY’s user store and certificate authority. The Thales deployment delivers MFA and physical ID capabilities, in‑house self‑service for certificate/PIN management, and the operational controls needed to meet OneSKY’s access and security requirements.
