MedStar Health Chooses SafeNet Strong Authentication Solutions to Protect Access to Critical Hospital Applications

MedStar Health, a large non-profit healthcare system, needed to secure remote access to two critical medical applications that store records from more than 139,000 inpatient admissions and over 900,000 outpatient visits each year while meeting HIPAA and HITECH requirements. To provide strong, portable and user-friendly two-factor authentication for doctors, nurses and staff, MedStar selected Thales’ SafeNet strong authentication solution, specifically the SafeNet eToken USB authenticator.

Thales deployed the SafeNet eToken USB to more than 1,500 clinicians across seven MedStar-operated hospitals, requiring possession of the USB token and a password for access. The implementation delivered strong two-factor authentication, ensured regulatory compliance, simplified deployment and token management, reduced costs related to potential data breaches and password administration, and earned positive feedback from clinicians for its portability and ease of use.
