A Thales Case Study
Fortune 500 Biotech Company was developing Bluetooth‑connected implantable pacemakers and needed continuous, global assurance that patient data and firmware updates remained authentic and confidential. The customer engaged Thales (in partnership with Keyfactor) to protect firmware signing keys and establish a high‑assurance root of trust using Thales Luna HSMs and a PKI solution.
Thales implemented Luna HSMs with Keyfactor’s PKI to issue device credentials, protect code‑signing private keys, install a root‑of‑trust in pacemakers, and ensure patient data is encrypted end‑to‑end (flowing through Azure and only decrypted inside the manufacturer’s datacenter). The Thales solution enabled secure remote updates and diagnostics, maintained data encryption at rest and in motion, increased device effectiveness and lifespan, supported global deployments, and reduced operational costs by consolidating HSMs.
