Case Study: FreeBit Co., Ltd. achieves a secure, scalable blockchain-based digital key infrastructure with Thales Luna HSMs

Bringing blockchain technology and Thales Luna HSMs together to forge an innovative digital key infrastructure

FreeBit Co., Ltd., a provider of ISP, cloud and mobile services, needed a secure, high‑performance way to manage private keys for blockchain‑based digital keys and tamper‑proof logs across automotive and IoT use cases. To meet strict security and performance requirements in an Ethereum environment — including FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation — FreeBit selected Thales and its Luna Network HSMs as the cryptographic hardware root of trust.

Thales implemented the Luna Network HSM (with PKCS#11 integration) to keep private keys in validated hardware, enable high‑speed signing and SmartContract/IPFS linking, and partition a single HSM into up to 100 virtual HSMs for parallel development and production. The deployment (including The Log solution) delivered FIPS 140-2 Level 3 security, on‑schedule service cutover, improved scalability and performance, and hardened backup/HA options using Thales’ Luna Backup HSM.
