A Thales e-Security Case Study
University of Malaya faced a growing problem with counterfeit degree certificates and wanted a way to issue credentials that were hard to forge and easy to verify. The university turned to Thales e-Security for a digital signature approach that could support its plan to create an e-Scroll, a digitally signed and time-stamped degree certificate that employers could authenticate online.
Thales e-Security helped the university implement a complete digital signature solution with Thales nShield HSMs and Thales Time Stamp Server, in collaboration with GiAT Infosys Sdn Bhd. The university signs each approved e-Scroll with the Registrar and Vice Chancellor’s digital IDs in an automated batch process, stores private signing keys in tamper-resistant hardware, and adds a secure time stamp against the Malaysian National Clock. The result is a certificate that is easier for students to download and for employers to verify, while reducing reliance on printed paper certificates and helping University of Malaya address fraudulent credentials.
