BACS, the UK ACH service, needed to replace its aging BACSTEL access network as part of its NewBACS technology renewal programme. The existing system was reliable but costly to run and lacked the flexibility to support new services, even though it processed over 60m payment items on a busy day for more than 100,000 UK businesses.
BACS selected Thales e-Security’s SafeSign Service Centre for BACSTEL-IP to provide strong user authentication, traceability, and a robust audit trail. Thales developed a multi-channel validation capability to support 12 banks, 7 PKI systems, and 5 smartcard manufacturers, and the complete security solution was designed, developed, and tested in just 6 months. The new platform enabled near real-time payment status reporting, 100% electronic reports, near 100% straight through processing, and stronger fraud protection through real-time certificate verification.
