Thales HSMs Secure Snapper’s Mobile Reload Transit Solution

Snapper, a New Zealand company, needed a secure way to let riders in Dublin check balances and reload LEAP transit cards from their smartphones without slowing performance. The project was time-sensitive, had to stay within a fixed budget, and needed to support up to 500 people topping up at the same time while meeting the National Transport Authority of Ireland’s requirements.

Snapper turned to Thales e-Security and used nShield HSMs, Security World, and CodeSafe to protect transaction data, encryption keys, and sensitive crypto code inside tamper-resistant hardware. Thales also provided guidance through its Advanced Solutions Group, helping Snapper deliver the solution quickly and with confidence; the HSMs supported simultaneous consumer transactions at a rate 6x greater than required.
