Thales HSMs Secure Hitachi’s Finger Vein Biometrics

Hitachi wanted to bring its Finger Vein biometric authentication system into the banking sector, where digital signatures must be highly secure and meet strict regulatory requirements. The company needed a way to protect BioPKI, its biometric digital signature approach, while allowing banks to authenticate users in less than one second and reduce the costs and handling associated with paper documents.

Hitachi chose Thales e-Security nShield Connect Hardware Security Modules for its BioPKI deployment in Central Eastern Europe. Thales HSMs were used to protect private keys, create digital signatures, and run custom signature creation code inside the HSM security boundary through CodeSafe. The solution helped Hitachi meet Polish legal and audit requirements, and it was used in biometric digital signature implementations at banks including BZ WBK and Getin Noble Bank.
