Thales e-Security Helps Delta Dental of Missouri be a Good Ombudsman of Patients’ Data

Delta Dental of Missouri, a dental and vision benefits carrier serving Missouri and South Carolina, needed to encrypt the many terabytes of data in its claims system to meet HIPAA requirements for data in transit and at rest. Its CIO said the company wanted to be a good steward of patient, provider, and group data and avoid reacting after a breach. Thales e-Security was brought in after other database encryption options would have required major changes to the application and surrounding processes.

Thales e-Security demonstrated the Vormetric Data Security Platform, which provided policy-based encryption, centralized key management, and transparent protection across Windows, Linux, SQL databases, and storage area networks. Delta Dental of Missouri said the platform saved at least nine months of application rewrite effort, had one of the easiest installations it had experienced, and was nearly invisible to users. The company reported encryption overhead was “pretty close to zero,” with automatic failover between appliances and straightforward management supporting HIPAA compliance.
