Thales Accelerates Polycom’s Integration of Digital Certificates into Phones

Polycom wanted to give its VoIP phones a unique identity so devices could be authenticated on customer and service provider networks, while also reducing the risk of spoofing and counterfeiting. To do that, the company turned to Thales e-Security and its nShield hardware security modules to generate and secure digital certificates and encryption keys during manufacturing.

Thales e-Security and its Advanced Solutions Group helped Polycom design a secure end-to-end process in which keys are generated and certificates are signed in Polycom’s North American data center, then transferred to manufacturing in Thailand and inserted into new phones. Using CodeSafe within the Thales nShield HSMs, Polycom protected certificate issuance, transmission, and device insertion, helping safeguard customer calls, reduce counterfeit risk, and support sales opportunities.
